Your old computer or even a new PC start hanging and
Windows freeze for a few minutes or an hour. In this case
only Task Manager is working and shows 100% disk usage. You
tried to end some process but the problem is continue and
shows 100 percent disk usage. A process in Windows forces the
system to utilize the hard drive to its full capacity and
causes 100% disk usage problem, leading to unresponsive
system. 

There is no particular cause to 100% disk usage problem
in Windows but it may be due to Chrome, Skype or some other
app. In this article, We will show you how to fix 100%
disk usage problem and improve Windows performance.

1) Change Power Plan Settings :

Go to Power Options > Change plan settings >
Change advanced power settings, choose High performance from
the drop-down box and make sure all plan settings are on
default.

2) Disable Superfetch Service :

Superfetch service is the potential cause of 100% disk
usage problem in Windows 8 and Windows 10. To fix issue, open
Command Prompt (cmd) as administrator (press Win button to
open start menu and type cmd. Now press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to
run cmd as administrator).

Type the following command and press Enter

net.exe stop superfetch

To disable Suerfetch service permanently,
press Win button to open start menu and type run. Now open
the Windows services by typing service.msc
and press enter.

Find the superfetch services by scrolling down and
click on properties. Go to General > Startup type and
click on “Disabled”, click apply and press OK.

You should also check disk for errors in Command
Prompt. Close all the application first and type the
following command.

chkdsk.exe /f /r

3) Disable Windows Search :

Open the Command Prompt as administrator and enter the
following command:

net.exe stop windows search

To permanently disable Windows Search, press
Windows key + R and type services.msc, press Enter. In the
service windows, find the Windows Search and click
properties. Go to Windows Search Properties > Start up
type and select disabled. Click apply and press
OK.

4) Disable Diagnostic Tracking : 

Open the Command Prompt as administrator and enter the
following command:

sc config “DiagTrack” start= disabled

sc stop “DiagTrack”

5) Setting in Google Chrome & Skype :

In Google Chrome, click the three dot icon at the top
right corner and click “Settings”.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click
“Advanced”.

In the “Privacy & Security” category, turn off the
“Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly”.

For Skype, go to C:Program Files (x86)SkypePhone,
right click Skype.exe and select properties.

Go to “Security” tab and select “Edit”, click “ALL
APPLICATION PACKAGES”.

Now check the box against “Allow” in the permission for
ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES.

Miscellaneous Fixes :

–>Go to Settings > System > Notification &
actions and disable Get tips, tricks and suggestions as you
use Windows.

–>Make sure your computer hasn’t been infected with
malware. Download Malwarebytes
Anti-Malware
and scan your system
drive. 

–> Uninstall Flash Player update, go to Settings
> Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced
Options > View your update history > Uninstall
updates.
